This photo was brought to my attention by researcher Don Monroe. The skull from Lovelock Cave find that was housed in the basement of a Nevada museum was seen and photographed by him in the 1960s and 1970s, allowed there by the curator at the time.
The curator had performed measures on the skull. They were considerably impressive.
MANDIBLE HEIGHT
Lovelock 8-1/4"
Me 3"
MANDIBLE WIDTH
Lovelock 13"
Me 6-1/4"
EXTERNAL AUDITORY MEATUSES
Lovelock 12"
Me 6"
SKULL TOTAL HEIGHT INCLUDE JAW
Lovelock 20"
Me 8-3/4"
Here's a comparison to visualize -
Where did this skull go? Well, it was squirreled away and hidden from view, likely in the 1980s. Since then, the museum has signs up very emphatically claiming there were no red-haired giants and do not ask about them.
It's lucky we have folks like Don Monroe who were willing back in the day to go with the folksy curator and explore the basement items.
