The Mole People!

It sounds like something out of a 1950s SciFi b-movie, but mole people is actually a term for people who live underground, most often in empty drainage tunnels and subways.

The most popular places for "mole people" is NYC's underground subway tunnels.

(LINK) According to a 1993 book on the subject, NYC’s underground dwellers have fashioned entire societies: with teachers, nurses and even elected officials. The idea of a subterranean society mirroring our own is a weirdly unnerving one, and legends of the strange and violent mole people continue to abound to this day.

(LINK) The Coalition for the Homeless, released a report that says that there is a 23 percent increase of homeless New Yorkers living in both the city streets and subways.

Given the elements, New York's general frustration with panhandling and people living on the streets and the lack of space to live above, if someone is staying in New York without funds, this is where they are going to go.

Las Vegas is a city with temperatures often over 100 degrees. To survive that kind of homeless existence, about 1000 people seek out shelter in flood control tunnels underground. The sad reality of this is, one desert storm hits, and a lot of lives could be in peril.

Man has always sought shelter in sturdy structures that provide protection from the elements. Our first homes were inside of caves. They also provide a constant temperature when the outdoors is too extreme.

One of the most amazing mole people cities ever was found in Turkey in recent decades. Derinkuyu was discovered when a man in 1969 noticed an odd room behind a wall in his home. This led to tunnels. Then, it became apparent it was quite extensive. In fact, it could house 20,000 people and animals at one time.
